On paper, it was born in Brazil. In practice, it is today a Swiss car — imported, customs-cleared, inspected and registered — and, above all, recommissioned here in Switzerland by a professional workshop, with detailed invoices on file. That is where the real value lies: a classic whose recent history is known, item by item.
The file leaves nothing in the dark. Engine and flywheel refaced, gearbox removed, overhauled and re-adapted, front axle fully rebuilt — stub axles, bearings, geometry —, steering overhauled and corrected, braking redone from the cylinders to the handbrake cables, electrical system restored from the loom to the instrument cluster, bodywork and welding, heating fitted. Every item is invoiced, dated and filed. Bosch ignition. You aren’t buying a promise: you’re buying work you can read line by line.
Its looks come from further afield. The split-windscreen T1 — those two flat panes, that unmistakable face — is the silhouette Volkswagen had already left behind in Europe by 1967. Elsewhere, it carried on; this one keeps alive the most sought-after line in the entire Transporter family. Configured as a nine-seat Kombi, finished in two-tone soft green and beige with its period curtains, it hides a second character: a fully removable camping fit-out — convertible bench, tables, sink unit with two-burner stove, checkerboard floor — that lifts out to restore the original nine-seat layout. A collector’s piece one day, a travel van the next.
The 1,584 cc flat-four runs with the simple, hard-wearing mechanicals that made the Bus a legend, and the vehicle is ready for the road right away, without the delays and uncertainties of importing: it is already here, in order.
